Art by Susie Gilmour
The origins of my journey as an artist began with abstract painting. Over time, like many artists, I reached a point where I felt stuck - and just stopped painting.
It was serendipitous that I happened upon the world of Fluid Art and became obsessed with the many methods of releasing layers of paint onto a canvas then guiding and coaxing the colours to flow, collide and interact evolving into a magical kaleidoscope of colour and form. The science of mixing paint with various additives of thinners, thickeners, colours, metallics and enhancers turned me into an experimental alchemist with results sometimes ending in laughable disasters or, as my technique grew, resulting in an amazing and unique work of art! Some works I would further embellish with inks, paint or resin.
Now my journey has rounded another corner and I've returned full circle to abstract painting. Delving into a couple of art courses revived lost inspiration and renewed my excitement for the more conventional methods of paint palettes, brushes, charcoal, crayons, graphite - and whatever I can lay my hands on!
Learning how to not plan but to practice emptying my mind allowing my intuition to take control is not easy task. This challenge has renewed the excitement and freedom of expression I had missed without realizing it.
I'm always excited to see what's next!
